For the eighth year, the FIFA Interactive World Cup has got underway with immense anticipation and excitement, as EA Sports’ search for the best FIFA player in the world resumes.
It’s all very well saying “FIFA 12 is just a game why take it so seriously?”. Well, next time you’re shouting at your missus because the EA Servers have gone down *again*, you can tell her the prizes at stake are $20,000 and a place at the 2012 FIFA Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich, the most prestigious prize in football.
So how do you qualify? Well, this year the tournament has been broken up into Seasons, running monthly from December to May. For each season, the top two players on the online leaderboard will secure a ticket to the FIWC Grand Final. The location of the final is yet to be announced, but last year took place in Los Angeles. This introduction of the Seasons format is to ensure that at the beginning of each Season, everyone starts from zero again, giving more chance to those who have joined the game late. The FIFA Interactive World Cup option is available in-game under “Online Modes”.
However, that is not the only way to make it to the final. As well as this, EA will be running 11 Live Events, where gamers will play each other in the flesh for a chance to qualify. Finally, the defending World Champion will be at the finals
, completing the 24 finalists that will be jetting off to the unknown location for FIWC 2012. For UK players, this live qualifier will take place in London (it is believed).
We can also announce that this year, Gaming Till Disconnected will be sending a team of gamers up to the UK Qualifier, as part of the newly formed “Team GTD”, as the site looks to prove itself amongst the elite of gaming teams. To register your interest in joining Team GTD, and coming to the Live Qualifer for FIWC 2012, please email luke.smith@gamingtilldisconnected.com – are you the best FIFA player in the world?
Last year, the FIFA Interactive World Cup broke the world record for the largest computer games tournament, with 869,543 players taking part both online and in the live events. It’s is widely expected that this figure will be surpassed once again. Last year’s winner Francisco Cruz will be attending the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala on January 9th, meeting footballing legends such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Xavi, and World Player of the Year, Lionel Messi. Cruz said “It still hasn’t quite sunk in. Meeting players like Messi and Ronaldo is something not everyone gets the chance to do. I’m really going to savour it!”.
Want to prove yourself as the best FIFA player in the world? Then start climbing the leaderboards, or prepare for the Live Events (more details to come). Gaming Till Disconnected will be there every step of the way!
